The lucky country, or the lazy country?

Australia lags behind the world in one key area.

No matter how long you’ve lived in Australia, there are still a few things about this country that might surprise you.

Did you know, for example, that we have three times as many sheep as people? Or that Brisbane has hosted an annual cockroach racing championship since 1982? How about that we have one of the lowest rates of first aid training in the world? Hold up… This one isn’t so fun.

But it’s true.

According to St John Ambulance Victoria, just 1 in 8 Australians know first aid. As a result, roughly 59% of deaths from injuries could be prevented by someone with first aid knowledge.

Training numbers, especially in Melbourne, took an expected dive due to the pandemic. But we can’t use the pandemic as an excuse anymore. Look, don’t get your first aid training done because TrainupNOW told you to. We’re not your Dad. Get it because if someone comes rushing up to you and asks, ‘Do you know first aid?’, you won’t feel more useless than a chocolate teapot. Instead, you could be a hero.
