DESCRIPTION:The 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course is for any interested adult.\nYou will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.\nThis course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.\nWhat’s the format?\nThis is a 12-hour course, which is usually delivered as either:\nA 2-day training package (6 hours per day), or as 4 separate modules (3 hours each)\nWho can attend?\nAny adult can attend.\nWhat is the cost?\nAttendance fees for the two-day training program is $350.00 inc GST per participant, which includes resources, morning/afternoon refreshments and lunch.\nWhy attend a course?\nEvaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided.\nWhy TrainupNOW?\nApproximately 20% of Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing an MHFA Course with TrainupNOW will help you to develop the skills to support a friend, family member or co-worker.\nAcquiring mental health first aid skills with TrainupNOW means you can assist someone developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis and make a real difference to your community.\nTrainupNOW has been delivering physical first aid and aquatic rescue courses and involved with the emergency services system (surf lifesaving) for over 10 years.\nAccreditation\nDemonstrate your mental health first aid skills by becoming an Accredited Mental Health First Aider. Complete an online assessment after the course to become Accredited.\nWhat the course covers\nLearn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.\nThis is an education course, to learn how to give first aid to others, and is not a therapy or support group.\nDeveloping mental health problems covered:\n\nDepression and anxiety\nPsychosis\nSubstance use problems\n\nMental health crisis situations covered:\n\nSuicidal thoughts and behaviours\nNon-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)\nPanic attacks\nTraumatic events\nSevere effects of drug and alcohol abuse\nSevere psychotic states\nAggressive behaviours\n\n
